| The
Fresh Up Club, the debut release from Austin’s
Elizabeth McQueen and the Firebrands, isn’t your typical Americana
record. With a voice that has been compared to both Patsy Cline
and Dinah Washington, McQueen sings her way through a mix of music
that has as much to do with the straight ahead honky-tonk of Ernest
Tubb as it does with the quirky roots rock of Rockpile.
McQueen’s vocals are anchored by the outstanding musicianship
of the Firebrands. Guitarists Andrew Nafziger (Bruce Robison) and
Chris Miller (Marcia Ball, Hollisters) along with bassist Lindsay
Greene and drummer Brian Smith shine with a mix of stunning creativity
and solid technique. Along for the ride are Casper Rawls on guitar
(Toni Price, the Leroi Brothers), Jim Murphy on steel (Asleep at
the Wheel, Johnny Paycheck) and John Michael Whitby keyboards (Asleep
at the Wheel).
